Team Building and Private Group Tufting in Philadelphia

Most team-building activities in Philadelphia ask people to compete with each other or to be funny on command. Tufting asks for neither. Everyone stands at their own frame, makes something with their hands, and leaves holding it. That turns out to be a much better format for a group that includes both the person who talks constantly and the person who'd rather not.

We've been running workshops at the Bok Building since 2018, and group bookings have become a real part of what we do — company offsites, birthdays, bachelorette parties, family gatherings, and the occasional department that just needed a reason to be in a room together.

Why tufting works for a group

A few things about the craft make it unusually well-suited to a mixed group:

There's no skill floor. Nobody in your group has done this before, which means nobody starts ahead. That's a rarer quality in group activities than it sounds — in cooking classes there's always someone who cooks, and in trivia there's always someone who wins.

It's loud in a good way. Tufting machines make noise and the work is physical. People talk over it, walk around, look at each other's frames. It doesn't have the enforced quiet of a painting class.

Everyone leaves with an object. Not a photo of an experience — an actual tufted piece they made. Teams tend to bring them back to the office. We've had groups tuft their own logo, which is either charming or ominous depending on the logo.

You can't really fail at it. A tufted piece made of big color shapes looks good almost regardless of drawing ability. The medium is forgiving in a way that flatters beginners.

What a group session involves

Group workshops follow the same structure as our public classes. Everyone gets hands-on instruction with power tufting machines, covering how to set up a tufting frame, stretch primary cloth, and thread and operate the machines. We also walk through how to cut, glue, and finish a piece.

Frame, cloth, yarn and machines are all provided. Participants work on their own design — or a shared one, if your group wants to coordinate. One project per person per workshop.

Our public formats give you a sense of the range: the Mini-tuft workshop at $75, the evening Drink and Tuft at $100, and the full One Day Tufting workshop at $150. Group and private sessions are quoted separately depending on size, timing and what you want the session to include — email us and we'll put together something specific rather than pointing you at a package.

Group sizes and who can come

One thing worth knowing if you're comparing Philadelphia options: we take minors. Ages 10 to 13 can attend with a parent or guardian present throughout, and ages 14 to 17 can attend on their own. A parent or guardian signs a workshop release beforehand.

That matters for family reunions, scout groups, school trips, and birthday parties for teenagers — bookings that most tufting studios in the city can't accept, because they're adults-only. If your group includes anyone under 18, ask us.

Where you'll be

The Tuft Education Studio is in the Bok Building, 1901 S. 9th Street, Room 501, Philadelphia, PA 19148 — the converted vocational high school in South Philly that now houses a few hundred makers, artists and small businesses. It's a genuinely interesting building, and for out-of-town colleagues it reads as a real Philadelphia experience rather than a generic event space.

Practical notes for planning: street parking nearby is workable but permit rules vary block to block, and it gets tight at peak times. Bok is close to the 45 and 47 bus routes and the Snyder and Tasker-Morris stops on the Broad Street Line, so transit is the easier call for a larger group. The Dudley Street entrance is open to the public weekdays 9am to 5pm; other entrances use the Butterfly keypad, where you can search for Tuft the World and we'll buzz you in.

Tell your group to wear clothes they don't mind getting fuzzy, and to skip loose sleeves, scarves and long necklaces. Closed-toe shoes are sensible.

Planning notes

• Book early. Weekend and evening slots go first, and a group booking takes a full studio.
• Tell us the purpose. An onboarding week and a retirement send-off want different pacing, and we'll adjust.
• Think about the design in advance. If you want everyone tufting a shared motif or a company mark, send it over ahead of time. Large color forms translate well; fine detail and small text do not.
• Budget for finishing. Participants leave with a tufted piece and know how to finish it, but full finishing — backing and binding — is more than one session allows. If you want pieces returned finished, ask and we'll scope it.
• We can invoice. If your company needs a purchase order or an invoice rather than a card payment, that's not a problem.
